First (un-)desirables
Almost 2 months after planting the tomatoes, the first one has turned red 😀
That’s the “desirable” part of the title. As for the “undesirable” one, there’s actually two.
First the little hole you can see in the red tomato. That’s a little home of some creatures, probably little flies. This is normal, so I’m not worried at all. Not having them would be great though, because there’s always a chunk of the tomato that needs to be removed. Luckily our chickens will love it, with the extra protein even more so!
The other undesirable is the first little “weed” that has started growing. Up until I started watering the individual plants in addition to filling the ollas twice a day, there wasn’t a single weed growing. Nothing. That’s one of the great advantages I was looking forward to when using ollas. Since there is no water or humidity in the surface layer of the soil, seeds that get deposited there by the wind don’t germinate and grow. Now that I’ve started watering though, they get the opportunity to do just that, and today I saw and removed the first little weed that thought it could slip through. Well, not today!
