Box of Organic Seasonal Fruit & Veg: 1st order
We’d been wanting to order a weekly box of local, organic fruit and veg for a few years now. They used to be advertised in a local paper, but that stopped and we hadn’t seen them available anywhere, until last month we visited the health food store in one of the mountain villages. They offer five sizes of boxes, from “mini-mini” to “large”, all freshly-picked and organic.
So, this week we placed our first order! We opted for a “medium” box of 8-10kg (recommended for 3-4 people) at €27 for thirteen products. Initially we thought that the selection would be a surprise, but it transpires that we are able to choose from a seasonal list of vegetables, herbs and fruit.
Additionally, we ordered 6kg of juicing oranges (also organic, at €8) and opted for the following:
White courgette – Green courgette – Red onion – Purple spring onion – Cabbage – Brussels sprouts – Curly red kale – Red kale – Toscano kale – Red potato – Leek – Beetroot – Avocado
We were impressed by the size and volume of the box: everything looks fresh and delicious. The purple spring onions are huge, not what we’d expected at all! It’s convenient that the order is placed weekly, so we can choose a smaller or larger size, as well as different items – or none at all. Orders must be placed by 12:00h on Tuesdays for collection as from noon the next day, so one doesn’t need to plan much in advance. The only disadvantage is that we have to drive all the way there to collect it, but hopefully in the future we can set up a “fruit ‘n’ veg run” with other people coming from the same direction. Until then, as from next week, we plan to make the most of it by stopping at the river for a swim on the way there. Two humans are greatly looking forward to this and one dog is in for a fun surprise!
