Day 14: Time for a bigger pot
Just like the first load of radishes, the time has also come to make some space for the watermelon shoots. Basically what I did, is prepare some bigger pots with more compost in them and then very gently pull out the biggest watermelon shoots. This needs to be done very carefully as not to damage the roots. Some roots will get torn off anyway, but by doing it slowly and gently, the majority remain intact.
As I described in a previous post, I’m not going to transplant all of them, as I have no space for them and I don’t think it makes sense. Watermelon plants get really big and need lots of water, so having just a few survive would be more than enough, also regarding the fact that a single plant will have multiple fruit. As for the ones I won’t be nursing completely, they will get a final transplantation somewhere on a slope where hopefully mother nature will take care of them. Knowing me though, I will most probably take care of them anyway 😉 But I will definitely prioritize the ones that I’ve replanted and are growing in the little greenhouse.
